The Unabridged Gay Men's Book Discussion Group

Here are the books we'll be reading and discussing in the near future, (and the dates we'll be meeting to discuss them.) Note: The Book Group does not meet in November or December.

Tuesday, April 1 at 7 pm: God's and Monsters, by Christopher Bram. This book was previously titled Father of Frankenstein. Glbtq.com says this is "Bram's best-known work...a fictional account of movie director James Whale, whose homosexuality compromised his pre-World War II Hollywood career. At once comedic and grim, Father of Frankenstein moves beyond nostalgia in its evocation of 1950s Los Angeles as it examines sexual identity, repression, and the unexpected twists and turns of human relationships." The book was later adapted for the screen as the well-received film Gods and Monsters.

Tuesday, May 6th at 7 pm. I Am Not Myself These Days, by Josh Kilmer-Purcell. Robert said of this book: "Looking for a new Augusten Burroughs? Meet Josh Kilmer-Purcell, and his drag alter-ego, Aqua. This captivating memoir is a cautionary tale about loving an addict, a celebratory story of New York night life in heels and goldfish bowl tits, and a questioning tale of identity: who are we, and what are we looking for, in or out of drag? I loved this witty and poignant book so much that I read it twice in a month!"

The Gay Men's Book Group is free and open to the public. We meet on the first Tuesday every month at 7 pm in the bookstore. (We do take a holiday break in November and December.) The book we discuss is always a paperback, and you can buy that title at a 20% discount the month before the meeting—if the book is not marked "20% off," just let the clerk know you are buying it for the book club and you'll get the discount. What can you expect from a meeting? Attendance varies month to month but averages 5-15 participants. While some group members show up loyally month after month, new faces are common, and most welcome. The discussion evolves informally and organically, and lasts a little over an hour.
