Children's Books

the prince of mistTHE PRINCE OF MIST by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
Little Brown and Company, $17.99.

Although marketed as a young adult title, adult fans of Carlos Ruiz Zafon will find plenty to like in this satisfying Gothic tale of a family moving to a coastal town and their encounters with a terrifying supernatural character named Cain, or The Prince of Mist. There is a constant sense of menace (which is vague at first) that will have you looking over your shoulder while reading. This is a very well-crafted classic ghost story!

Ianni loved and was creeped out more than a few times.

young zeusYOUNG ZEUS by G. Brian Karas
Scholastic Press, $17.99.

Using the familiar stories of Zeus and his contentious family as a basis, G. Brian Karas imagines the childhood and youth of the Greek god. Monsters, trickery, danger -- villains and heroes -- the author deftly uses all these elements to craft a fresh illumination of a Greek myth for today's children.

A perfect book to introduce Greek mythology.
