Like the other books from Dorothy Press, Wild Milk is a surreal and immersive affair. The first collection of stories by poet Sabrina Orah Mark, these pieces are strange hybrid creatures, part prose poem, part riddle, joke, fable, and fairy tale. To wander in Mark's stories is to delight in the magic of language, to relinquish understanding, in the intellectual sense of the word, and to follow blindly the slippery logic of these stories' trick-mirror reality.  They have a voice reminiscent of Miranda July, the fairy tale sensibility of Aimee Bender, and the bizarre logic of Donald Barthelme, or James Tate, or Carmen Maria Machado at her wildest.  Some personal favorites: "For the Safety of Our Country" (about a sort of summer camp for Presidents); "Spells" (about a woman who was once the Lice Lady of the town); "The Taxmen" (about a group of taxmen who come for her father's heart). Each is bizarre and compelling; gorgeous and unfathomable. If, as the Clarice Lispector line goes, "understanding is the proof of error," then these stories are error-free. I devoured this collection.  I understood nothing. It all made perfect sense.

— Audie

A genre-expanding collection of stories that Publishers Weekly calls perplexingly captivating and astonishing.

Fiction. Jewish Studies. Women's Studies. WILD MILK is like Borscht Belt meets Leonora Carrington; it's like Donald Barthelme meets Pony Head; it's like the Brothers Grimm meet Beckett in his swim trunks at the beach. In other words, this remarkable collection of stories is unlike anything you've read.
