The Spare Man, by Mary Robinette Kowal, is a spin on a classic story with modern sensibilities. Tesla Crane is a brilliant roboticist and the heir to a financial empire. Traveling incognito on a space cruise from Earth to Mars with her new spouse Shal for their honeymoon, all she wants is to enjoy anonymity and cocktails. But then she witnesses a murder, and Shal somehow becomes the prime suspect. Kowal deftly weaves a detective story into the glitz and glamour of futuristic high society. The characters are complex, the cocktails are fancy, the mystery is fun, and the gravity varies by deck.
