Queer Book Club - "A Visitation of Spirits" by Randall Kenan

Queer Book Club!

A reading group focusing on literature through a queer lens, hosted monthly at Chicago’s premier bookstore for the LGBTQ community. Alternating between the “classics” of gay fiction and contemporary, historically underrepresented voices, we read to explore queer experience across literary genres and eras! Join us in friendly discussions on the last Tuesday of each month. For questions about this book club, email Matt at matt@unabridgedbookstore.com.

This month the Queer Book Club will meet to discuss A Visitation of Spirits by Randall Kenan on a new night - Tuesday, February25th at 7pm.

Randall Kenan's daring and innovative first novel weaves a vivid and horrific tale through the generations of a black Southern family. Sixteen-year old Horace Cross is plagued by issues that hover in his impressionable spirit and take shape in his mind as loathsome demons, culminating in one night of horrible and tragic transformation. In the face of Horace's fate, his cousin Reverend James "Jimmy" Green questions the values of a community that nourishes a boy, places their hopes for salvation on him, only to deny him his destiny. Told in a montage of voices and memories, A Visitation of the Spirits just how richly populated a family's present is with the spirits of the past and the future.

Randall Kenan grew up in Chinquapin, North Carolina, and graduated from the University of North Carolina. He has taught at Sarah Lawrence, Columbia University, Duke University, Vassar College, the University of Mississippi, and the University of Memphis, and is now a professor at the University of North Carolina. His collection of stories, Let the Dead Bury Their Dead, was published in 1992 and was nominated for the Los Angeles Times Book Award for Fiction, was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award, and was among the New York Times Notable Books of 1992. Kenan is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Whiting Writers Award, the Sherwood Anderson Award, the John Dos Passos Award, and was the 1997 Rome Prize winner from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was awarded the North Carolina Award for Literature in 2005.
